Tips on How to Prevent Accidents at Work

Employers have a duty to protect you from accidents and injury at work, but you have to take responsibility to your own actions too.  If you are concerned about the dangers at work there are steps you can take to protect yourself. Read through the tips below and implement them in your everyday work to avoid being involved in a serious accident.

Be Alert

It’s essential that you’re wide awake and alert while on the job. Therefore it’s vital that you arrive at work well rested and that you avoid any alcoholic drinks or medicines that could leave you drowsy or incapacitated.  When you’re tired head outside if possible for some fresh air and drink plenty of water to help you remain alert until it’s time to leave.

Wear the Uniform and Recommended Clothes

If you work in a kitchen, factory or in construction the risk of being injured are increased. Your employer should provide you with a suitable uniform to wear or a clothing code to follow. Make sure you wear everything that’s recommended and that you wear all protective gear as instructed at all times. Never take a chance with your safety, the hard hat could save your life and the long sleeve t-shirt could increase your chances of getting caught up in moving machinery.

Pay Attention to Your Training

Your employer will need to provide you with some basic level health and safety. Sometimes this involves watching videos or taking a test. While you may find a lot of the topics covered to be common sense it’s vital that you do listen and pay attention. You should always take part in drills too, one day your life may rest on whether you listened or not.

Don’t Do Anything High Risk You’re Not Trained to Do

You may be asked to use heavy machinery or help out using machinery you’ve never used before. It’s important that you refuse to do anything that you haven’t been trained for if the job is high risk. You will be exposed to possible life threatening work and it’s not worth taking the risk. You should always discuss any concerns you have with your employee and speak to your managers or a health and safety specialist if you’re unsure about the work you’ve been told to do. It is illegal to make incompetent people carry out high risk jobs that require training, so contact the Health and Safety Executive if you suspect your employers aren’t complying with the law.

Be on the Look Out

Always have your wits about you, looking for potential causes of accidents. If you spot anything that concerns you make sure you report it to the appropriate person. You can also help your other work colleagues by always tidying up after yourself and making them aware of any potential risks.

Find Support

If you have been injured you will need to contact the right support if you wish to claim for compensation. Your employer will be prosecuted if they have not followed the health and safety laws but you will need to make a separate claim to be compensated.
