How Do I Treat My Child’s Cold

When your child has a cold, you want to do everything in your own power to help them feel better. The problem that so many kids face is the fact that they are exposed to a lot more germs than we might be as adults. For example, your child goes to school and is around dozens of other kids who all have colds or some other type of illness. While this is a normal part of childhood, it doesn’t make it any less frustrating when your child comes home with a cold. Knowing how to take care of it and treat it will make for a healthier and happier child.
Prevention is Best
As with any type of illness out there, preventing it is absolutely key when it comes to dealing with a cold. There are many ways for you to prevent a child from getting a cold. Many parents think that making their kids live in their own little bubble away from germs is the best way to avoid a cold, but this can actually make things worse. When your child is constantly exposed to illness, their immune systems will build up very strongly and they may not get half as many illnesses or colds as a child who is always told to keep away from germs and sicknesses.
Prevention could also mean teaching your kid the proper ways to wash their hands or when to tell you if they are feeling sickly. By knowing how to take care of themselves, it will be easier for them to avoid a cold. For instance, you might want to let your child know that they should wash their hands often, especially if one of the kids in their class has a cold and is showing signs of being sick.
Treating the Cold
Treating the common cold often involves plenty of bed rest, lots of liquids and a lot of vitamins. Your child really should be on a daily regimen of vitamins even if they aren’t sick. Vitamins will help to boost a child’s immune system so that it is stronger and can beat off any cold that might come its way. This is definitely something you will want to talk to your child’s doctor about because it will help greatly in the battle against germs and illness.
You should also take your child to the doctor if they have a high fever or are very sick. If your child is throwing up a lot or using the bathroom a lot, they could easily become dehydrated, and this could be fatal if it is not handled in the correct manner. Taking them to the doctor is one of the best ways for you to help your child get the right medication or medical advice that they need to be a healthier person. While colds are often unavoidable, you can make them a lot less stressful by preparing your child and knowing exactly what you’re doing with the treatment.
